Zcash breaks $1200 as things get even sillier

I think I can speak for all of us here when I say that the Zcash pump that is currently happening, a sequel to last year, is nothing short of absurd. Today, the price rose 20%. Zcash is also up 140% on the month, and 2500% for the year. But how somebody can look at the price chart and not see blatant manipulation is beyond me. For example, Zcash had only 3700 transactions yesterday, many of which were block rewards or unshielded. Nobody uses this project. But with their VC backing and Silicon Valley connections, they are apparently not going away any time soon.
The good news, though, is that this is actually having an extremely beneficial impact on Monero's performance. The positive attention towards privacy will likely benefit Monero more than any other project. Our chart looks healthy and organic. The only thing annoying me is our mining hash rate is not at an all time high, which is puzzling, and our transaction totals seem to have hit a wall at 30,000. I do expect a doubling in price to help those things out though. What do you think?

Literally every person who buys Monero is at least a bit more advanced than the average people who buy ZCash or Bitcoin because it's not as easy to buy.

It would be interesting to see what percentage of Monero is held in self-custody compared to Bitcoin or ZCash but I assume it's not possible unless the all the CEXs said what they have.

@xenu
I suppose the zcash market is a vehicle to funnel money to insiders / research: like Trumpcoin.
In this way it is different to a normal memecoin which are more about launderers laundering their own (client's) money. Zcash market cap ($20B) is higher than the biggest memecoins which topped out around $15B (excluding Doge which is different and Shibu Inu which was an extreme outlier)

Maybe those same insiders getting paid through zcash are cashing out through monero? Wouldn't be surprising; all the other criminals do it and it would help to explain the pump.

Also how can anyone look at the monero chart and think healthy and organic growth? I see wild volatility since April 2025. These are not sustainable prices.

btw anyone shorting zcash be careful because it has shown recent history of prolonged negative funding rates. You might win the bet but still lose more money on fees.

Looking at the all-time hash rate chart does make me feel a bit more optimistic and glass half-full that things are progressing in the right direction.

Hash rate has roughly doubled since the 2021/22 peak. Now that the summer heat wave is tapering off it will be a good time for hash rate to come online - just thinking from the perspective of mining on a computer at home which can generate a bit of heat.

I don't understand who actually uses Zcash. One of my big issues with Zcash is the lack of desktop clients. Virtually every wallet they list on their website is a multi–wallet app available exclusively for Android and iOS. There is cake wallet, but iirc it only has Zcash as an available option on mobile. I do not understand the point of making wallets exclusively for mobile while neglecting the desktop user base entirely. There is the Zcash CLI, but to my knowledge it requires the downloading of a full node. It's obvious Zcash isn't actually intended to be used as a currency for transactions, but is the same as Bitcoin with a few extra gimmicks to cater towards investors, which are most likely going to get scalped by the VC backers. There is virtually no other way for them to make money. Other than some third party payment gateways, I have never seen a vendor who deliberately lists Zcash as an accepted payment method. So I really do not understand the utility value Zcash provides and for what purpose people actually use it for other than investing in it on CEXs to follow the latest hype.

Even Firo has some level of utility value and is much easier to use and adopt. I do believe there is a need for other privacy currencies outside of Monero. I don't see too much value in having the currencies compete with one another, but work together. Swapping from Firo to Monero and vice versa does give you a decent boost in overall anonymity, plausible deniability, and privacy. It's similar to how I see Tor and i2p working together by solving different use cases rather than being used as a replacement for the other network. Unfortunately, I just can't see how Zcash fits into this ecosystem in the slightest.

Then there is also the use of browser extensions for wallets and payments. It's one of the things that bothers me about vendors who say they accept crypto currencies, but do not explicitly state which payment gateway they utilize. I go to pay the invoice and then it only lists coinbase or bitpay as available options, which defeats the entire purpose of paying in crypto. First, they only accept corpo and shit coins, which are fully transparent. Then they require the scanning of a QR code with a mobile app or the installation of a fucking browser extension. In some cases, they also require the creation of a KYC account. Why pay in crypto when you have to go through an extensive KYC process and are forced to pay from a mobile app or browser extension?

The entire Zcash ecosystem just feels like one big con with the people behind the coin attempting to become the next Microstrategy. The one thing I could see in the future is the use of Zcash among corpos. If they make transactions in virtually any other currency, the transactions are available to the public. The corpos aren't interested in hiding funds from the government, but they would be interested in concealing funds from the public. Monero isn't an option given how governments view the currency, but the corpos may very well receive the green light by governments to use Zcash. Outside of that, that's the only possible utility value I can see for Zcash.

It just makes me hate the ZioCoin, it makes me jealous and angry. Maybe that's what they are trying to achieve? I know from experience that if you are pressuring someone (smart) and they notice that counter force doesn't work, they rather go lightly towards to their opponent and then go two steps backward.

Meaning, maybe they noticed headwind is not working against Monero, so they are pushing the ZioCoin to mainstream and then 'rug' it or something to delegitimize Monero?
Writing this also reminds me of the fake 'GOS' phones pushed to e.g drug dealers, which the biggest blow was the broken trust and insecurity, rather than actual data extracted (big media event etc. pp.).

I think this strategy won't work fully, since monero has organic adoption and is also bullish.
Monero is getting more media attention, breaking the first or second layer to mainstream.

This is prolly only part of what is going on, but it might be a new perspective. Wdyt @xenu?
