Mexico's mandatory mobile-line registration is another example of what happens when anonymity becomes something the government decides people aren't allowed to have.

The government says linking mobile lines to CURP and identification will help combat fraud, extortion, virtual kidnapping, and organized crime. But the result is that ordinary people are required to identify themselves simply to maintain access to a telephone service.

I wrote about the registration system, the privacy and data-security problems it creates, and why alternatives like PikaSim and Monero matter when people want to maintain some control over their own communications and transactions.

Silly to assume that the cartels have no influence within local/federal governments, giving then access to citizen data.
This is dumb. People signing up for this are willfully painting a target on their backs.

Tho Mexicans aren't ignorant of this fact. Hopefully they'll learn to make do without ph. numbers, temporarily at least. With enough force, the State won't have any other option other than to backtrack like they did earlier this July as discussed here by Derrick Broze.

Long term, however, we all may need to learn to live with 2 phones, no phones or something.
