Mexico's mandatory mobile-line registration is another example of what happens when anonymity becomes something the government decides people aren't allowed to have.
The government says linking mobile lines to CURP and identification will help combat fraud, extortion, virtual kidnapping, and organized crime. But the result is that ordinary people are required to identify themselves simply to maintain access to a telephone service.
I wrote about the registration system, the privacy and data-security problems it creates, and why alternatives like PikaSim and Monero matter when people want to maintain some control over their own communications and transactions.
