I like the idea of a privacy-oriented currency that can do "app" functions similar to Ethereum.

I would also like to hear everyone's opinion of Zano.

Zano absolutely blows. They have shady origins with Boolberry, a premine and later weird transfer to Zano, centralization, and they have staking on top of the premine/transfer which they took advantage of. You can also tell they have paid off influencers like Aaron Day and Roger Ver to shill the hell out of it as an affinity scam (e.g. They mention Monero and then in the next sentence mention Zano during interviews).
It's only redeeming quality is the possibility of a stablecoin usage, which they have with fUSD, but what they aren't telling you is that it is an algorithmic stablecoin. This is very bad, and has failed many times in the past in other projects that are small in market cap.
Zano does not have the smart contract features that Ethereum has. In fact, it is quite limited on what it can do.
The question then arises: who actually would use Zano? If you want to do app like functions, you would use a reputable project like Ethereum with a proven track record, influence in the market, actual adoption, etc. And further, if you want to use a stablecoin, you would use something that is reputable.
They also had an absolutely abysmal response to the data leak that happened last year where an anon Monero researcher exposed that their nodes have no network privacy and that you could deanon the network because of that. Their response was: use a vpn.

@xenu
Thanks for the intel

The reason I was interested by Zano is the private proof of stake protocol. One use for this would be that it could make running decentralized/permissionless cross chain liquidity pools for monero much easier. For example, I'm not convinced thorchain will achieve that because rune is not private.
