privacy vpn email swiss

Although the first article has suspicions of bias. namely, that Tuta is a company registered in Germany and inevitably shows some favoritism toward Germany. the core concepts of its blog remain valid.

Switzerland, as a country that is "neutral" and "safe" in financial terms, has created an illusion of privacy-first ideology. However, in reality, Switzerland is a small country with far less developed internet infrastructure compared to its neighboring European countries. In terms of internet-related legislation, expert participation, federal legislative experience, and engagement with internet human rights, it occupies a position that people tend to overlook.

Meanwhile, many companies that claim to prioritize privacy rely solely on their registration in Switzerland as their "security credential." But now even this single point is becoming increasingly questioned and unreliable.

@GlitchFrame
I don't understand why everything is privacy privacy privacy all of a sudden.
Whats even the point? I think its a psyop.
If you have a genuine opsec reason to require privacy, only a fool would rely on some consumer email provider.
I personally use tutamail because it lets you login without bs verification steps.
And I don't care if they tracked every email because Id never use it for anything dangerous.

@Nebuchadnezzar_II i love tuta, been with em for a couple year.

I hear they've recently supported the LGBTQ woke agenda though...what're your thoughts on that?

Personally i don't sit well with it.

@BraveSmoke
I didn't hear about that.
To be honest I'm completely indifferent.
They're my email provider, not my lawyer or bank.
So I'm happy to use them for emails but I wouldn't trust them for secure operations, or for critical verification flows.
So far I've had a good experience and its pretty convenient.

If they turned out to be complete malicious, what do you think is the worst thing they could do? Track information and implement digital id gated access I guess.

Proton has all of its AI infrastructure in Germany to hedge against Swiss laws changing for worse privacy protection.

Andy Yen (Proton CEO) has said they are prepared to fully move away from Switzerland if this keeps up.

So, you’re right. Switzerland isn’t what people think it is anymore.

@GlitchFrame short of running your own email server, and only emailing trusted people running their own, and both sender and receiver encrypting emails themselves prior to hitting send, there really is no such thing as private email. Commercial email uses someone else's server, and while the messages themselves may be encrypted (if and only if both parties use the same provider such is the case with Proton or Tuta), there is always still some meta-data involved that will be left unencrypted. Its just the nature of the protocols used for email. Never was intended for true privacy, just a means of convenient communication.

@BraveSmoke while I see your point, how far are you willing to take a stance of not using something or giving a company your business over politics / culture war issues? You might be left with zero options for anything. Now, if they start putting the Pink Mafia politics ahead of a quality product, that's one thing. But as long as the product doesn't suffer, who cares what their stance on any issue is? Some made issue of one of the Mullvad team donating to some 'far right' candidate. I say who cares. Mullvad is a great VPN. Do what you feel you need to do, not trying to dictate your choices, I just think people get too wrapped up in this shit.

@nemesis has the right idea. The only type of email correspondence that can be called 'private' is one where PGP encrypted messages sent back and forth, and even then metadata can still be picked up by servers. Sam Bent has a fantastic article breaking down proton mail, and I assume Tuta has similar downsides: https://xcancel.com/DoingFedTime/status/2030108076531995016

@Nebuchadnezzar_II I do, but I don't have a great scientific reason to give you.

Proton makes no claims of E2EE with Lumo, and they explain their process quite well. I don't think Proton is data harvesting. If something like that ever got out, their entire business goes kaput overnight. However, if there's a security incident, and an adversary is farming Lumo chats - that's an entirely different question.
