shum should have used monero privacy news thread

Some of you may remember shum.fyi. The site documented real-world cases where individuals or organizations suffered financial censorship, privacy breaches, frozen funds, surveillance, or payment discrimination… and the implicit punchline was always the same: "Should have used Monero".

It’s a shame the site is no longer active. The concept was effective because it didn’t rely on theory, it relied on reality. News stories did the explaining. Monero was simply the solution sitting in the background.

So let's start a dedicated thread in that spirit. Share credible news articles, explain what happened and point out how private, censorship-resistant digital cash would have changed the outcome.

Not as mockery. Not as "we told you so", but as case studies.

The trader, who posts under the name TraderSZ, wrote in a Thursday post on X that the former employee threatened to disclose his identity and private details and also contacted members of his family. TraderSZ said relatives who used Revolut received messages seeking to pressure him into paying.

“They looked up my details and found any other family member using Revolut and contacted them to force to pay up or be blackmailed.”

There are indications that the acquired USDT was used to support the value of the Iranian Rial, providing a viable alternative for market intervention given that sanctions prevent the regime from deploying its official foreign reserves.
The transparency of blockchains means that these illicit flows can be tracked and blocked.

The Central Bank of Iran has acquired US dollar stablecoins worth at least half a billion dollars

According to multiple Korean media reports on local sites Naver, Chosun and others, the press release related to the National Tax Service’s enforcement campaign against tax delinquents and seizures that the authorities had carried out. The release reportedly included an image of a Ledger cold wallet and a sheet of paper showing the wallet’s full mnemonic phrase without any blur or masking.

“Lawful users of digital assets may leverage mixers to enable financial privacy when transacting through public blockchains. For instance, individuals may use mixers to protect sensitive information on personal wealth, business payments or charitable donations from appearing on a public blockchain.”

Under the new rule, any transaction that would reduce the balance below 2,000 baht will be blocked. Two exceptions apply: automatic direct debits - such as utilities, loan or credit‑card payments already authorised by the customer - and full withdrawals made at a branch to close the account.

The announcement triggered an immediate storm on social media, where many users accused the bank of overlooking low‑income customers who keep small balances. Some said even 100 baht can matter to poorer account holders. Others said they planned to withdraw their money and close their accounts before the new rule takes effect.

Under the current rules, exchanges are required to provide paper copies of tax form 1099-DA, the IRS tax form used to document crypto transactions from a centralized exchange or broker, if users request paper forms.

The proposed new rules, slated to be published on Friday, remove this requirement and allow brokers to “terminate” their relationships with existing clients if they refuse electronic delivery of tax forms.
