Preserving Monero's culture during a bull run

As I am sure many have you noticed, August has been one of the most positive months in terms of price action in Monero's history. For long time holders, we are on the cusp of exciting times, with a significant expansion in growth almost certainly to arrive over the next several years, and of course with the release of FCMPs, Monero will easily hold the throne of the consensus privacy option for cryptocurrency. But with these movements in price come the herd, of moonboys of course, and this will have a significant impact on Monero's culture. I'm not sure what to expect. I gave the recent Monerotopia a listen and there were some extremely bullish comments from Bawdyanarchist, some of which seemed partly delusional to me, but then again, I don't know what can happen, and it got me thinking that if the price of Monero does move up violently, bringing us to the four digit territory, that a lot of things are going to change.
So my question to you is, how will you help preserve Monero's culture?

For myself: I don't think there is a secret formula and for the most part I am going to keep doing what I do best, which is making creative privacy and tech focused content which doesn't waste time looking at price charts. And, I will keep using Monero every week. But what will change is a growth in my fanbase of complete noobs, so I will also have to prioritize making educational content for beginners. I am also going to start trying to improve onboarding from the privacy companies still dragging their feet with Monero adoption. Utilizing the monero shame list, I believe it will be easier to convince companies when Monero is starting to receive mainstream recognition. Lastly, what I am not going to do is directly engage with moonboyism. There is no point to have gatekeeping. Instead, I think "leading by example" is the way to go, and making educational content with my seasoned advice would be the best way of doing this.

On the one hand, the notion that some ideas are morally superior to others is a doomed project; in all its long life it has achieved nothing but ignorance.

On the other hand, what you're saying is completely true; the reality of modern censorship is that true and fruitful discussion is forcibly drowned in a sea of irrelevance. The bad news is that true culture/true forum will never flourish on big tech's servers. The good news is that true culture/ true forum can never be stopped in its own space, our own servers. True forum will perpetually exist one degree into the esoteric; it must be deliberately and intentionally sought, found and used.

This is all especially true of monero, because knowledge of monero is the final key to unlocking a weapon which changes the game of money completely. That knowledge is therefore a target of censorship.

So my answer to you is this:
Do not rely on big tech servers. Run your own web services at every oppotunity. Don't worry about being harder to find; thats the name of the game for authentic media.

@xenu The worry is real, but I think the framing can flip: it isn't newcomers that dilute the
culture, it's the reason they arrive. Price brings people; use is what keeps them. Someone
who shows up for a green candle and never runs a node, never spends XMR, never holds their own
keys — they were never really here, and they'll leave when the chart turns. What's left after
the tide goes out is the culture.

So I don't think the answer is gatekeeping. It's making the ethos legible and, more
importantly, lived. Run your own node. Actually spend Monero on something. Self-host what you
can. People convert to the values through practice, bull run or not — and the practice is the
anchor precisely when the price is loud.

And honestly, a sober relationship to price is part of the culture worth preserving. The
plain fact that no crypto makes you rich at a household scale isn't cynicism — it's the
vaccine against the bull-run mindset. If you're here for sovereignty and privacy, the price is
weather, not the point. I run my nodes and self-host not because it pays (it barely covers the
electricity), but because that's the practice that carries the values I actually came for.

A bull run tests that. It doesn't have to erode it.

Your channel is gonna be one of the big ones. Great work, real thumbnails and no moonboyism.

As for what I can try.

Firstly, helping people (who want to listen), truly understand the "why". If an idea is built on a solid fundamental, people will care about it. It's the idea that is worth such a high price, so focus on that, not the price. It's your freedom which is the exciting bit!!

Direct to good resources, there is a lot of slop and grifters, I imagine that will only increase.

Although we don't have a choice, it would be nice if there was some more time before Monero becomes much larger. FCMP++ to be rolled out and stable, some work done on share or perish. And maybe even a look into finality layer / PoS + PoW... (with an open mind about pros / cons ... e.g. pos (without a reward, so basically required to be able to mine, I think jberman wondered about that..) could provide protection from state level attacks (atm Monero could be bricked by flip of a switch).

Plainly, I don't think its possible to preserve "monero culture" amkng users.

Monero was built by and for prescient men who recognize the need for private currency. For this currency to function as intended it must allow fools who fail to see the importance of privacy to use it. The inevitability is that the mass adoption of monero will dilute the number of prescient men with fools.

That doesn't mean monero culture can't be preserved, it just has to be exclusionary.

@xenu

how will you help preserve Monero's culture?

Considering the fact I really don't feel like selling to get nice gains from the recent price action (even if I'd use the gains to buy more XMR back after an expected correction), I think I'll just keep the passive onboarding attempts going. Last example was a family member that I gifted them an item I bought with Monero, and I made it clear to them it was Monero what allowed me to able to purchase and afford said item.

Just passively spreading awareness, waiting for whenever someone I know finally feels like 'alright, let's actually dive into this' just like how I did myself, having known about Monero for about 4 or so years before actually finding a reason to engage with this internet money.

It is unfortunate that the biggest thing that makes people want to jump into Monero is after all the price action, from what I observed.

To add to this, I remember when I first got into Monero I was taken aback by the community sentiment, where the focus was more about the technology, good opsec and philosophical discussions mostly around anti-establishment. I remember this left a positive first impression, as it was a breath of fresh air knowing the little I knew about the crypto currency culture before that.

Which is another important point, to @xenu and others who wish to engage with complete newbies, I think it's absolutely critical to highlight this distinction beforehand; that crypto is in fact a massive scam, and Monero is the exception to that rule, due to XYZ...

For technical-adept people, I like to explain it by saying Monero is the money equivalent of Linux, PGP, Tor network, Signal Protocol etc.

The less the discourse is about price and Number Going Up, the more legitimate the project and community will seem to the uninitiated, at least the ones who do have the seeds already planted in them for topics like internet privacy and freedom, such as myself.

Fantastic point. Yeah this needs to be brought up immediately to the noobie.
