There's a project called Cuprate, a full Rust alternative, but it's not finished, still in development. It also uses its own separate database format from monerod. Their own numbers put it at around 202GB vs monerod's 292GB, and syncing up to 10x faster (source: user.cuprate.org). RPC's being made nearly identical too, so anything using monerod's RPC today can switch over easily once it's ready. Worth keeping an eye on.
