The Birthday Thread Circus
A comedy in several acts, featuring a cast of people who apparently forgot how to read.
ACT I: THE ORIGINAL SIN
A 15-year-old starts a thread because they're bored on their birthday. An innocent request for conversation. A few comments later, the subject of DIY hormone therapy enters the room.
I question the reasoning behind a 15-year-old boy deciding to chemically alter his natural biological development. I raise concerns about conditioning, outside influences, and the possibility that the conclusion he's reached didn't emerge in a vacuum. A specific argument. A specific concern. Surely, this shouldn't be too difficult to understand.
Oh, how naive.
ACT II: THE GREAT INVENTION OF ARGUMENTS NOBODY MADE
Apparently, questioning one particular medical intervention means opposing ALL medical intervention. Someone mentions vaccines, because questioning whether a teenager should be self-administering estrogen is obviously the same thing as wanting smallpox to make a comeback.
Next, we discover that unless I believe humanity should abandon every hospital, every medication, and every medical procedure, I must concede the argument.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have discovered a revolutionary new debate technique. Invent an entirely different argument, defeat it, and declare victory over the original one. Why address the actual point when you can fight a fictional opponent?
ACT III: THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE TOPIC
Enter a participant armed with academic rankings, Western propaganda, 9/11, Muammar Gaddafi, Nestlé, processed food, Australian restrictions on children's internet access, separatism, nudism, and bestiality and somewhere along the way, the original question disappears beneath an avalanche of unrelated grievances.
We're no longer discussing a teenager's reasoning, but conducting a geopolitical summit sponsored by a conspiracy theory convention and a supermarket chain.
Then comes the rebuttal, explaining that these subjects are unrelated, that academic rankings don't prove intellectual superiority, and that conspiracy theories don't establish the argument.
Notice the miracle: everyone is now debating everything EXCEPT the original point.
ACT IV: THE DARK ARTS OF MISUNDERSTANDING
I question social conditioning. The response? Apparently, I believe all transgender people are brainwashed simply because they encountered the concept.
I question the influences shaping a child's decisions, and now, I'm supposedly arguing that building a Tor forum proves someone cannot be brainwashed.
I question the reasoning behind a particular decision and somehow I've attacked someone's entire identity.
I criticize one specific situation. but suddenly I'm being accused of wanting to abolish medical infrastructure and return civilization to the Stone Age.
At this point, I'm beginning to suspect that the thread needs a reading comprehension specialist more urgently than it needs another philosophical debate.
ACT V: THE PHARMACEUTICAL PHILOSOPHER
Another participant argues that modern society alienates people from their natural needs and that pharmaceutical medicine profits from the resulting problems.
I agree with the general direction but point out that pharmaceutical culture isn't necessarily the only source of conditioning. Online communities, social pressures, and other influences deserve examination too.
For a brief moment, two people are actually discussing the subject but then the conversation returns to its regularly scheduled programming.
ACT VI: THE DOCTOR'S EXECUTION
One participant declares that any doctor who provides this kind of treatment to a child is a psychopathic criminal who should be put to death. A moment ago, we were discussing medical supervision. Now we're holding a miniature Nuremberg trial in a cryptocurrency forum. The irony is almost artistic. and now the solution to people making decisions someone considers dangerous is to make an even more extreme declaration.
Consistency has left the building.
ACT VII: THE BIRTHDAY CHILD'S DEFENSE
The birthday celebrant explains that they live in China, face restrictions at home, have difficulty accessing medical support, and are attempting to manage their situation independently. The circumstances are undoubtedly relevant to understanding their predicament, but the original question about how their beliefs developed has not magically disappeared. Instead, the discussion becomes a contest over whether questioning a person's conclusions is equivalent to denying their identity, and so the two sides continue arguing past each other. One side insists that questioning the reasoning is an attack on the person, and the other insists that the reasoning itself is precisely what deserves scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the birthday cake is gathering dust.
ACT VIII: THE GRAND FINALE
Thirty-five replies. Hundreds of views. Pharmaceutical ethics. Brainwashing. Vaccines. Western propaganda. Conspiracy theories. Chinese social conditions. Academic rankings. Medical supervision. The future of civilization. Somewhere underneath all this long list of intellectual rubble lies the original question:
What influences have shaped this teenager's thinking, and how thoroughly have those influences been examined?
Apparently, this question was so difficult to address that the participants had to reconstruct it into approximately seventeen different questions first.
Congratulations to everyone involved. The birthday thread has officially evolved into a travelling circus of ideological projections, invented arguments, righteous indignation, and people congratulating themselves for defeating positions their opponent never held.
And the winner is...
ABSURDITY!
The special guest appearance was made possible by our sponsors: Poor Reading Comprehension, Argumentative Goalpost Relocation, and Pharmaceutical False Equivalences.
Thank you for attending.
Please exit through the gift shop. And remember folks: when someone says something you disagree with, the traditional procedure is to determine what they actually said before explaining why they are wrong. We understand this procedure may be unfamiliar.
Happy birthday, everyone. I mean why not. 🍿
