After recent news of a few prominent Bitcoin channels being taken down by YouTube, it became obvious that this can happen to anyone. While those may have been reinstated after lots of commotion on X, why not have a backup?

Monerica now has all its YouTube videos replicated to: video.monerica.com.

No JavaScript, works over Tor. Leave comments with a PGP key. Download the videos if you want in 1 click.

Let's never let Google control us.

@monerica Wow if thats true then thats so petty.

Anyway surely youtube solves a much more difficult problem of actually storing and distributing all those files. I don't understand why indexing wouldn't be any easy problem to solve. All thats required is for any self hosting channels that want to be reached to expose a standard interface, and inform a public indexer node of their address. Then we would also solve the infrastructural problem by passing the burden on to channels and archivists. I think this is how sepiasearch works but I've not looked too deeply into it today.

Sadly, youtube is super convenient and has a captive audience so I suppose this sort of project will remain niche.

@monerica btw do you consider making separate domain for it?
somehow if its separate dedicated entity maybe more and more people will adopt (since its easier to type and remember too), so far things like rumble etc (which has content like catching predator) is alot on there lol since youtube ban that type of content.

i think its will be good right...? like
"some-goodname".com or else
then they had something like
POWERED BY MONERICA

@Nebuchadnezzar_II YouTube does a lot, not hating on it. It’s an incredible platform in many ways. It’s surprising how much they allow on there.

But for video distribution, Monerica and Monero Academy use bunny.net. It’s not perhaps as robust as YouTube but it’s a globally distributed content delivery network, just depends how much replication is needed. YouTube is free to host on, this isn’t.

Not sure what standards there are, there’s some kind of video SEO though that Google uses, some on page json and site map for video.

@UsualCat this was really just an experiment to prove how ridiculously easy it is to build a video platform. Also just to have a plan B if the Monerica YouTube content starts questioning the Federal Reserve and other establishments them gets banned.

This is a really small content library of only about 108 videos. Only around 150k views on YouTube. If it was 10x that then sure, a dedicated domain might make sense. In that case it probably wouldn’t be just Monero content.
