@avarice this will become more and more common as people keep connecting things to the internet that have no business being connected. While not a hack, a bad update did similar to home refridgerators recently.

@RetardedAutist You're right, I meant to write Ovens but then got distracted because I was wondering what word I should use xD

I think it's interesting the hackers chose to act at night, so it impacted not just the commonly refrigerated goods, but even fresh produce that you might not imagine as refrigerated (if I understand it correctly)

I'm sad there are no videos or live footage/ pictures of the stores circulating (probably since it happened at night, stores just stayed closed)
But I'm kinda surprised but not surprised at the fire thing, really curious as to the specific details there.

Tbh @xenu , even if it was just one store it would be alarming/foreboding.
From another article:

The chief executive of Coopérative U said several of its supermarkets had been hit by the "extremely serious and unprecedented" attack.

More than 100 of the chain's supermarkets were targeted, while 180 stores from Intermarché and its Netto brand were affected, with a spokesman saying that another 100 shops were urgently disconnected from the internet to prevent the same thing happening to them.

Other major food retailers including Carrefour, Monoprix and E.Leclerc were also hit by the attack, which targeted software provided by Danish engineering firm Danfoss.

The software allows retailers to manage their cold units remotely.

Brazil has this Carrefour supermarket chain as well, and if I could guess a country to have out of date firmware... but who wants to start shit with Brazil... (not that they're strong xD Maybe China will colonize Brazil for natural resources)

@nemesis Yeah I saw that story! And it happened during a Korean Holiday Season, where people had loaded up their fridges for tasty homemade korean feasting... legitimately sad

Reject smart devices, I'm gonna buy my appliances used, idgaf.

@avarice From the beginning of it, I never thought any of this IoT crap was a good idea. It was pretty obvious to me that any and all of these prolems were guaranteed to happen sooner or later. I somewhat get why a large corp with hundreds of locations MIGHT want the feature (maintanence checks and such), but why the hell a regular person would want their fridge or oven or washing machine online just makes no damn sense at all.

Smarthome to get hacked left and right.
Not sure if it is a good idea to hack supermarkets.

@nemesis
And the even crazier thing is some of the projections for edge computing infrastructure which will accompany the iot. For example, mini data centers at regular intervals along main roads to keep all the driverless cars connected at ultra low latency. What a fucking scam! Hackers will have a whole new world to explore, and I'm sure that's an intended consequence.

As in this case... I doubt this would really come as a surprise to whoever made the decision to put in those fridges.

@Nebuchadnezzar_II Oh the whole car thing, similar but also entirely a different (and potentially worse) issue at the same time. See Michael Hastings, Obama era.
