bring back admin

I'm just writing to weigh in on the issue with admin going missing.

Basically, I agree with @eravsar that it's no longer fit for use.

Personally, I don't care about the ethics of punishing a scammer and I don't really even care about messages getting watched.

But think about what we are actually doing here? What are we actually hoping to achieve when we write to each other here? For one we are discussing the emerging technology and monetary systems, from the perspective of monero users. This could be very important. Secondly, we are creating a resource for the community to come and take part in the discussion and to make connections.

Now consider that the discussion here is entirely intermediated by a privately controlled server. In my opinion this is not a problem because they are replaceable; we can always put up another server. That being said, it is not rational to keep trusting this forum's server because it is likely to have been hijacked! (wake up sheeple!)

The problem is not that we are getting spied on. The problem is not that anyone is running off with the tip money (dis forum not bank). The problem is that this server is not a trustworthy custodian of the value in this discussion itself. (If there's any left after the bickering bullshit. oh well better than a circlejerk)

So this is why I'll be writing posts on monerouserforum.com. Its pretty much got a lot of the same features as this forum but without some of the more gimmicky ones.

I don't think we need a darknet forum because there are plenty of those, and most people don't even have tor installed. This forum is much more accessible.

There are some other clearnet monero forums but Monerica's is the most smart and accessible.

btw if you think I'm a government agent pls send a tip and I'll delete your file ;)

@nemesis
Its always a possibility and just because there is some code published doesn't mean that's the actual code running on the server. I'm just saying that a hijacked forum has less chance of providing stable, uninterfered with conversation, and ongoing tech support / growth comparted to a forum actively developed by monerica. Like I said the problem isn't spies because this is a public forum anyway. They could try to capture your IP but it doesnt matter because even someone chatting shit about monero all day might only have dust in their wallet.

@BraveSmoke
I looked at stasher but it seems so monetised that there no chance of having a 'discussion' that isn't a popularity contest. I agree about starting blogs. I think we disagree about the threat of censorship. I doubt that anyone would care to censor this forum. Orwell presented a future of censorship which never materialled because it never needed to; in this brave new world the truth is available but drowned in irrelevance. Why shut down a forum when you can just shut down the sheeples' brains? Anyone can throw up a new website these days with a vps and domain name and put anything on it and I don't see that changing because most plebs just use a few 'brain control' apps anyway like reddit or tiktok or whatever. So my belief is that we should make the most of this and put out services which are easily accessible to anyone with a browser because most people just aren't interested in all that hard to click shit. Btw: did you get XNS?

@Nebuchadnezzar_II Oh I'm not implying it could or would prove anything. But verifying the site was brought up, so figured I'd drop a link to the code. And I find it hard to believe a glowop would include a self-hosting option with MIT licensing. That is just entirely illogical. And I'm also not disagreeing with the premise of your OP. In fact, you make very valid points. But what I was getting at in my first reply to Yayo, was if monerouserforum is run by spooks, so is Monerica. I have never seen anyone question their legitimacy.

Thanks for the link. I don’t know enough code to audit it either. Open source and self-hosting are useful because someone else can maintain the software or run another instance. Preserving the existing discussions would also require access to the records or backups.

My technical questions concern who controls the running server, who maintains it, and how account data is handled. The published code helps us examine the software. Checking what’s actually running requires further verification. we can each so only so much with what we actually know.

Blurt is another example worth examining for a shared public record. A community could explore adapting that approach, removing posting rewards and token-based governing power, and supporting independent operators. That would require development and testing.

Forum example:

https://forum.blurt.pl

For either option, I’d want to understand how the community keeps its accounts and discussions accessible when an operator disappears.

@yayogerardo Yea I wasn't saying code verification is the be all end all of proof, but I doubt an intel agency would give people a self-hosting option. That just seems counter-productive from their standpoint. As for who controls monerouserforum, its run by Monerica as I mentioned in my first reply. Now, do they control the physical server? Who knows, but Im sure the people there could answer that. And they appear to be a trusted group of people (to any degree strangers can be trusted), unless I have missed something about them (which is always possible).

@BraveSmoke Yeah bro. Monero name system. Its basically a registry of name.xns -> onion addresses stored on monero using its own protocol. I think it works with i2p too.
The good thing about it is you can have a hidden service called: bravesmoke.xns instead of trying to mine a good address. The bad news is that it requires an addon to resolve these addresses.
