zec zcash view-key view-keys carrot

Monero with optional privacy (frame it as optional transparency, if you prefer) is just zcash.

The reason that Monero works as a privacy coin while zcash fails is that zcash made deliberate design decisions that erode fungibility between "private" and "transparent" coins. Monero, with view-keys, is making that same decision, just without the deliberation.

Addendum: Suggestions for coins with mandatory privacy?

@bulletbill22 if they wanted the could've 'forced' us to make transcations with view key for all of moneros view key existance (which is years).

they never did it though

the new viewkeys will make air gapped hardware wallets easier, which is a huge benfit

listen to some monerotalk podcasts, with monero core devs

if it was 10 years ago and the CEXs had a monopoly on monero transactions, this would be a scary possibility. They don't anymore. They will have to compete with all the decentralised options that we already have and more that are being developed.

If some CEX decided to require view keys, no one will have to use it. In the same way that no one uses KYC exchanges anymore either. The time they had control over monero is long since over.

On the other hand viewkeys are so useful for things like storefronts, who can confirm payments have arrived without having to connect their spend key the whole time. Massive improvement to monero potential adoption.

@esna7
If CEX's tried that with IVK then it would be trivially easy to smugle non complaint funds into and out of their 'transparent pool' without causing an immediete anomaly (by matching utxo sizes). OVK would facillitate completely reliable tracing of funds in a 'transparent pool'.

Air gap is easy with feather wallet anyway.
All this saves is a scanning a couple of qr codes to check your balance. Not such an upgrade since you'll be scanning codes to broadcast transactions anyway.

@tuw8
I think you'd be surprised.
There's limited liquidity on haveno which is the only truly decentralized exchange.
The other swaps are permissioned, require temporary loss of custody, and largely rely on third party liquidity providers.
Local Monero was the best but where is that now?

swap providers are usable as liquidity without KYC, while not perfect. We have Serai in the pipeline and thorhcain apparently imminent. I don't think the average monero user's pipeline relies on Kraken or Kucoin at the moment, and things are only getting better from here. If Kucoin suddenly started wanting viewkeys it is easy to avoid them.

This is just old FUD that has resurfaced to try and suppress monero's recent popularity.
