Monero Cryptocurrency mining

I was just chatting with a friend who said Monero seems to be mined using a GPU, and then I was wondering, isn't Monero CPU-based? (This is my first time using Monero and I don't know much about it.)

Yeah, random x is CPU based.
In the past it was mined with GPUs but those algorithms has asics developed so Monero forked to random x.

You can probably still run it on a GPU if you wanted, I believe I have seen some ways to do this, but it would make more sense to mine a different coin that is more optimised to run on a GPU, then convert that to Monero, as you'd likely end up with more coins.

Xmrig has an option to include gpu mining. It's less efficient than cpu mining, but it does add to your hashrate.

@fantuan still remembering the day when people even making services on his website for free, on exchange of his devices become monero miner via coin-hive.com
back then people just put javascript if i not forget, on his sites with his monero wallet linked to coinhive account id. then more visitor come to web, idle, more money they get from mining :D

for gpu based mining, isn't worth for monero since its will waste the effords with smaller result than pure cpu ones. (i already test it on my Ryzen 7 with my 3060 gpu, seems it better on cpu indeed. maybe (just maybe) if he had dirt cheap electricity or too much gpu around, it will be worth it (maybe)

but if electricity is paid, all paid, ofc ppl will choose cpu (Why should we run with our legs tied when we can use both legs free??)

@UsualCat My equipment is too old, so the CPU and GPU don't matter.(600H/s T^T)

@fantuan yeah.... modern world indeed push up the treshold....
its not profitable for making money, but if you really had let says dirt cheap electric bill
you can just scale the hardware from secondhand market, (or just making web and let it cryptomine, dunno the browser hate it or not)
