block lock monero

2027 feels coming fast now
in the world that almost everything feels fast, we had one things that make us wait
which is monero 10-Block Lock

the question was. do we really still stuck and had no "wayout" from this one?
https://github.com/monero-project/research-lab/issues/95 seems we had one or two tweak to make.
been one long viewer of this git since 2022... and til now the lastest discussion seems 2025? so we not even came to close to eliminating block lock?

remove block lock when wen?

@Nebuchadnezzar_II agree. but but
last one mentioned about the security things too right? like finality layer that being discussed again after monero last block reorg

so i really sure. we had more than enough "wayout" to prevent it too.
if i not wrong, the main idea why block lock present is

  1. make it difficult to takeover the entire blockchain, and make invalidate the genuine chains
  2. to boost anonimity of the monero since earlier stage, we had smaller ringCT so it can be reveal by statistical attack on targetted people

but now, since we will had FCMP, and Bulletproofs++
it should be removed the number 2 on the list. and now takeover the entire block can be prevented too in much more different way. so with that in mind, did you agree that 10 block lock also need to be removed? it no longer beneficial for the community, instead it somehow act as limitation on monero

for merchant who suddenly had high transaction, he need to move/rotate the money immediately to get restocked. but if it can't be done since we had 10 block lock. and back then (this year for sure) i remember 10 block lock take almost 30+ minutes.

while btc, and litecoin, even can do it almost instantly. thats what concerning for me atleast.
for usual people, casual, and general ones, it may less than an issue, but for merchant, or someone who "literally doing something" 30 min almost mean, competitor win

What if we had the lock time adapt based on how much you are sending.

@Stylus1063 that would hurt fungibility.
the lock is irrelevant because of zero-conf. Simply divide your spend into smaller units so you don't have to wait ten blocks to use all of your Monero.

despite having been banned from /r/xmrtrader few years ago for "being erciccione's alt account", still not erciccione
i dont read books, erciccione read books so there lol

anyways, here's the relevant github issues on both haveno and monero:
https://github.com/monero-project/research-lab/issues/102

also since the Qubic attacks, with u know... the whole 18 blocks reorg thing:
https://rucknium.me/posts/monero-18-block-reorg/
article titled:
Monero's 18-block reorg: What happened, why it matters, and what does it have to do with the annoying 10-block lock?
it explains how the lock prevents tx invalidation on short reorgs
so the 10 block lock thing pretty much is a necessary evil type thing i guess

@UsualCat doesn't the existence of coin control essentially make this a non-issue? I've made multiple transactions back to back many times

@nemesis for people who had more to spend or more on wallet YES. but for ppl like me who separate "COLD wallet" with "Transaction" wallet its a things, since now i had limited xmr to moved, while at same time, i should wait money arrive and need to wait AGAIN to send those money.... while example when using btc or litecoin, all i need to do is just wait 1 block confirmed then send the money elsewhere (or in nutshell buyer > me > restock > wait new buyer, with 10 block lock, every buyer buy, i wait, then for restock i wait, while using litecoin, i almost can finish entire loop below 10 minutes)

@SpinningCat things that make me sad on that reference was, newest one was 2025... seems it never being touched anymore T.T || for cubic things. we had like finality layer (?) and much more back then (i forget the link). so in nutshell they expand alot of possibility to enhance the monero and some of them was had effect such as get rid the 10 block lock and else.... i think its good enough point to make since we need another wayout from 10 block lock.... waiting almost 30 minutes just for doing something really isn't fun to do

@xenu this one really need "effords" for it, sadly, if its become standart system and all we do is receive and send, i think it will be more good since sometime if ppl like me entered braindead mode... i just tired of thinking like... how much to devide

@Stylus1063 its bad i think, i mean so its now differ from people to people. seems isn't fair to me

@UsualCat
oh right indeed:
https://ccs.getmonero.org/proposals/kayabaNerve-finality-layer-book.html

Once a Monero block is finalized, it'd be unable to be reorganized out of the best chain, preventing deep reorganizations. Additionally, we would be able to replace the 10-block lock with a finality-block lock, ideally causing its effective removal.

so... it's been a whole year now tho... like, august 14, 2025, we're in august 2026 so literally a whole year has passed, it has been fully funded but like, where the book even at?

https://github.com/monero-project/research-lab/issues/135

but also seems like tevador was against the finality layer from kayaba (drama O_O :popcorn:)
which also has been working on that thingy that is built on top of the 10 block locks thing i guess?:
https://github.com/monero-project/research-lab/issues/161

idk, nerds doing nerds things, saying they gonna write books but not even writing the book thing, no clue wtf happening in moneroland lately lol
and then other contributors working on the other things and being against the premise of the book

meanwhile idk wtf and am just like:

Eh. I don't like the arbitrariness of the 10-block-lock, and I'd prefer a more elegant permanent solution. But after the Qubic attacks I'm hesitant to change things hastily. I'm gonna let the engineers have some more time.
