Mullvad is apparently the main financier of a Swedish far-right party

Original Story (Swedish) https://www.flamman.se/techprofil-ger-miljoner-till-orebropartiet/

Posting this because I hadn’t heard about it before and I’m probably not the only Mullvad user here, so might as well.

I’m not Swedish, but going off NATOpedia, it seems like the party is basically reinventing fascism from first principles:

The party claims to stand for a “class-conscious populism” which according to party leader Markus Allard takes inspiration from marxist ideology and unites the “productive” classes of society against the “Transferiat”, with the “Transferiat” being a term coined by Allard to describe the classes of society that lives off transfers that are a net negative for society such as those who, despite having an ability to work, live off social welfare benefits, as well as those who work “made-up services”[…]

The party differs from modern day left-wing parties by seeing the working class as co-dependent with people working in enterprise and business and instead sees the classes that “live off transfers”, as specified, as a large economic net-negative and an obstacle for a functional society.

Their ideology is nonsense fake-marxist revisionism to redirect anger at capitalism and turn it against immigrants and people who need social welfare (though they do back some generally left oriented social policies, their main thing appears to be racism)

Even if you’re comfortable with funding this, it still begs the question of just how trustworthy Mullvad actually is.

I guess this still beats any of the dozens of Israeli VPNs that definitely spy on you, but it’s not great

I see on lemmy. btw, just for the record, lemmy instance is mine :)

Not a Mullvad user, but I've recommended them in the past. I host my own VPNs.

This is apparently a personal donation made by one of the company's founders, not a public stance taken by the company. It's his money, if he wants to burn it on politicians then that's his prerogative.
Sweden will continue to be socialist regardless of what politicians get this guy's donation. You don't need to color the party as "right wing" or whatever to be against it; by simply being a political party it represents Statism, and is therefore anti-individual and anti-liberty.

Whilst I would rather support solely Libertarian businesses, that's just not tenable all the time. This doesn't functionally change the trust model or the product offering from Mullvad, I'd still recommend it over Proton for normies.

Mullvad still worth it because they use Monero for payment imo regardless what the founder did with their money. I mean that is what the spirit of crypto to begin with, you can do whatever with how you spend it. No authority can stop you. But we all have our own bias and preference so it's understandable if it become a dealbreaker to some people.

pretty much as was said on the 2 above replies
and not like i can vote nowadays anyways and not like would be supporting any politicians in the first place

i like ivpn too cause they also have great guides including that 8 part guides thing over there:
https://www.ivpn.net/privacy-guides/advanced-privacy-and-anonymity-part-1

but 2020 and after confirmed that literally the whole political spectrum is rotten af, for literally the whole world literally everywhere
there is no good side, all the sides are literally shit

and i guess that founder guy can indeed do whatever he wants with his monies but he failed at understanding basic memes lol
like what, memes are too hard to understand? 😹

Good for him, I'm glad he's in a position where he can contribute financially to causes he believes in. I hope the cause makes progress in their goals.

Because it doesn't fucking matter, and anyone trying to stir up boycotts of mullvad because of this is prolly a government plant wanting to strip away privacy.

Many cases of great projects ruined because the dev or leader believed 'the wrong thing'.
