Wow, I wonder if the murderers knew how much he had ahead of time or if they just knew that he “owned some crypto”.
$200,000 USD is really not that much money to murder someone over. The description of torture is very brutal.
Probably robbed by idiots. Interesting the second photo is the Bitcoin logo, but that tweet doesn’t say which crypto currency was stolen.
This is a good indicator to have an honest discussion about self-custody.
Be-your-own-bank means protecting your physical security. But that isn’t always possible or desired. There’s technical solutions like withdraw cool-down periods or multi-sig wallets, but will your deadbeat thug muggers give up when you tell them, “I really can’t give you my crypto, I locked it in a multi signature wallet controlled using a cool-down withdrawl script running in a smart contract! I swear!”
Answer: No, they’re just going to beat you up even if you’re being truthful about not having immediate access to all your own crypto.
One answer is to never disclose how much you have, which is far easier with Monero, but that isn’t a tenable solution since you don’t really need to look at someone’s bank account to know if they are wealthy since wealth can show in other ways.
I’ve made a lot of bad decisions in crypto, but I feel extremely fortunate that I never even hinted to a single person aside from my parents that I have any involvement in crypto. I wasn’t even being careful, I just thought talking about crypto was extremely cringe.
